There are many different health organizations struggling to convince people to move more, to walk for example. They talk about the benefits of walking, write and shoot videos, and scare people with the harm of immobility.
But still, most of the crowd, for example, in the subway, cheerfully stomps to the elevator, completely ignoring the stairs.
The Volkswagen company, without further ado, decided to motivate the inhabitants of Stockholm to walk by adding an element of the game to the unpleasant action. At night quietly, at the Odenplan metro station in Stockholm, workers in blue suits sawed, soldered and screwed something for a long time.
The next morning astonished passengers saw a renovated staircase: the steps were made in the form of white and black piano keys and made sounds when they were stepped on.
The Swedes really liked the innovation: people rushed to the stairs, forgetting about the escalator. Some couples hopped on the keys in sync, holding hands. Some passengers deliberately ran downstairs and again climbed up the keys, playing a melody. People began to move more, and received positive emotions – everything is a plus.
In terms of numbers, the number of people climbing stairs increased by 66%.
In Germany, in the subway Alexanderplatz, the same Volkswagen installed a real slippery slide in the subway with the sign: "Fast lane." It’s like in aquapark, only without water, made of slippery plastic. People happily began to slide down the hill. Girl in jeans and jacket. Mother with a daughter on her lap. Guy with a guitar in his hands. Woman in a dress. A man in a suit with a diplomat.
It was creative, helpful and fun for people and evokes a good association with the company.
In general, even Tom Sawyer proved that even an unpleasant activity can be made exciting if you turn it into a game. Remember how he painted the fence?
